Introducing our February Men's Program guest speaker; Garrett O' Dowd
Garrett is a social worker who has worked in the area of mental health for 18 years. He has worked in a variety of setting including a major psychiatric hospital, community rehabilitation and clinical services. For a number of years Garrett worked as a counsellor in the non-government sector providing support to individuals affected by a mental illness and their families.
For the last 17 years he has been the Coordinator/Counsellor of Mercy Grief Services a service that offers bereavement counselling support to people living in the Western Metropolitan region of Melbourne who are dealing with complicated grief and loss issues following a death.
Between 2008 and 2016 Garrett worked with SANE Australia as a consultant and co facilitator conducting of a series of Australia wide workshops run through their nationally funded Suicide Bereavement Project. The focus of these ‘postvention’ workshops was on raising awareness and increasing the capacity of service providers to support the bereaved friends and family of their clients (who had a mental illness) who have died by suicide or gone missing.
At our February Men’s program Garrett will be talking and reflecting on the impact of previous mental health issues on the person (who suicides) and on their family and how this can be a complicating factor for the bereaved, following the suicide of a loved one.
At the same time Garrett will be reflecting on his own experiences and what he has learned from working with people who have had this experience.
