Our April Men's Program is scheduled for next Thursday evening April 12, from 7 to 9pm.
Introducing Our April Men's Program Guest Speaker,
John is originally from NSW, but settled in Western Victoria. John became involved in Suicide Prevention after his brother Charles, a sheep farmer in central NSW died by suicide a little over 20 years ago.
John says; ‘The trauma from that event for those left behind, how little was spoken about mental health and the lack of services led me to the point of doing something positive and also trying to stop the suicide rate. It was all about starting the conversation’. One of the poems that John will recite next Thursday, goes a long way to starting the conversation.
John is involved in fundraising in the Geelong and Bellarine region along with the support of Freemasons Vic, for Hope Bereavement and their partners Jesuit Social Services. They held a lunch last year which raised a total of 26 thousand dollars and from Freemasons Vic another 75 thousand over 3 years. John hopes that this is just the start.
John will be talking about the plight of farmers and people who live in regional areas. He is hoping to highlight the pressures of people living in regional areas which he says are the same as those living in what he calls ‘the concrete jungle’.
